How do you think a war is won?
Wargames are not just about conflict. They are about critical choices that dictate the direction of a nation in dire times.
In an increasingly complex world of political power shifts, emerging technologies, and contested regions, the ability to simulate conflict and negotiation is a vital analytical skill. A wargame, offers a powerful model for understanding how nations behave, how crises unfold, and how diplomacy succeeds, or in some cases, fails.
Simulating Conflict is a 3-hour interactive workshop designed for all age groups interested in International Relations to learn the essentials of the project. Participants are assigned roles representing countries or organisations and placed in a simulated geopolitical crisis. Over the course of the session, they will develop
strategies, negotiate with allies and rivals, and attempt to resolve the crisis, or gain the upper hand.
Led by Ankit Tiwari, a researcher at the Centre for Security and Defence Research (CSDR), India, the workshop draws on Ankit’s expertise in emerging technologies and global security. Participants will gain practical exposure to decision-making under uncertainty, alliance-building, and scenario planning in the context of regional and global security.
While wargame doubles as an excellent strategic game, it is not only a simulation but a critical exercise in diplomacy, national security, and strategic thinking, equipping participants with tools to navigate real-world power dynamics and policy challenges.

Mission Briefing
We kick things off with a short intel session. Following a crash course in what a wargame is, how it’s used by militaries and policymakers, and why it's more than just "pretend play", you will walk through a couple of famous wargames. From high-stake exercises to geopolitical simulations, we will explore how new tech like AI and quantum computing is reshaping the battlefield. Then, before we enter phase 2, the scenario will be revealed.
Your mission will shortly commence!
By the end of the workshop, you will be equipped with:
-
The fundamentals of the wargame as a tool in policy and strategy
-
How to interpret and act on a fictional crisis scenario
-
How countries negotiate and compete in a dynamic geopolitical environment
-
The impact of emerging technologies on conflict and cooperation
-
Decision-making, coalition-building, and compromise under time pressure
